An Ounce of Prevention
National Science Teachers Association
Middle School Source Reduction Curriculum
As a way to reduce waste, the complete NSTA source reduction curriculum is now available electronically in PDF format. PDF, or Portable Data Format, is a way for different computing platforms (PC, MAC, Unix) to share the same files. PDF files are snapshots of documents, kind of like GIF or JPEG visuals. By downloading and reading the PDF files, you'll be able to review and print whichever lessons and materials you need. To read a PDF file, you'll need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. It's free! Once at the Adobe home page, click on the link at the bottom for Free Adobe Software and follow the additional links to Acrobat Reader for your type of computer. Install Acrobat Reader before trying to open the curriculum files.
If you've got Acrobat Reader installed, you're ready to get An Ounce of Prevention for the MAC or PC.
MAC USERS: You will need to use the program MacBinary to convert the file "nsta.sit.bin" to readable form. (Your Web browser can be configured to do most of the work for you.) Once converted, Unstuff the file called "nsta.sit" and you'll create a folder called "NSTA". Open it and start by clicking on the file called "guide.pdf".
PC USERS: After downloading the file called "nstapc", double click on its icon. A self-extracting version of Winzip will start up. When prompted, click the 'Unzip' button. A folder/directory called "NSTA" will then be placed on your hard drive in the main, or root, directory. Open the folder and start by clicking on the file called "guide.pdf".
